Parking in Chauvigny
Parking in Chauvigny is generally straightforward, except on Saturday mornings.
In the lower town, Place du Champ-de-Foire has space for hundreds of cars. It is closed to parking on Saturday mornings for the main market, so plan to park elsewhere.
Outside the tourist season, you can usually park in the medieval town on Rue Saint-Pierre, Place du Vieux-Marché or Place des Châtaigniers, or in the large public Parking de Bretagne at the end of Rue Saint-Pierre.
In July and August, a bollard normally prevents cars from entering the medieval town. Use Parking de Bretagne instead.
Getting to the medieval town
During the tourist season, cars are not allowed in the medieval town. Use one of the car parks mentioned above.
From Parking de Bretagne, the centre of the medieval town is about a five-minute walk away.
From the lower town, a free shuttle in July and August can take you to the Château des Évêques or Place du Donjon. Walking up to the medieval town takes around seven to eight minutes.
Walking down to the lower town
From the medieval town, the shortest route is towards the Château des Évêques, home to the Géants du Ciel bird show. Below Place des Châtaigniers, walk down Rue du Crime and under the small wooden bridge.
At the end of the lane, Rue des Trois-Rois on the right leads to the town centre. The street on the left leads to the public garden and the Bon Coin paysan local producers’ shop.
Cash machines
There are no cash machines in the medieval town. You will find several on the main street in the lower town.
Food shopping
There are no food shops in the medieval town. In the lower town, Carrefour Market is on the main street, opposite Notre-Dame church, and opens every day. There are also three bakeries, all closed on Mondays. Towards the end of the week, try the Bon Coin paysan, a local producers’ shop on Route de Saint-Savin.
For a larger shop, there are three supermarkets on the outskirts of Chauvigny: E.Leclerc and Super U on the road to Poitiers, and Intermarché in the Zone du Peuron.
